Martin Rothery

Author, and a man who has spent an unreasonable amount of time wondering why people do what they do.

I did not set out to spend my life writing books. Then again, I did not particularly set out to spend nearly four decades studying why human beings do what they do either.

One appears to have led to the other.

My work has moved through consciousness, change, belief, story, meaning, technology and the stubbornly unmeasurable parts of human life. Some of those ideas became Sanomentology and the Nine Realms Institute. Others refused to become training and became books instead.

The books

I write across fiction and nonfiction. That can make a catalogue look slightly unruly, which I rather like. The connection is less about genre than the questions underneath the books: what people believe, what gives a life meaning, what technology gives us, what it quietly takes, and why stories can sometimes reach places explanations cannot.

The other work
