A different kind of space

Some things are worth sitting with for a while.

Perhaps there's something you keep returning to. A decision you've been putting off, a relationship you want to understand better, or a part of your life that no longer feels quite right.

You may have talked it over, thought about it while doing something else, or tried making a change and found yourself back at the same question.

Living gives you room to examine those things properly. You can follow an idea, test an assumption, consider the consequences of a choice and keep the work you've already done.

Gold gives you the fuller collection of tools to do that work whenever life presents something new.

Good questions deserve somewhere you can return to, long after the first conversation has ended.

What you can actually do with Gold

Whatever needs your attention, there's somewhere to begin.

You might be weighing up a decision, trying to make sense of something that keeps happening, or working out how to make a change in ordinary everyday life. These are some of the ways Gold helps you approach it.

Get beneath the surface

Sometimes the first explanation doesn't tell the whole story. Explore what is happening, what you've assumed and which questions you haven't yet considered.

32 deeper investigations

Work through a difficult decision

Put your options in front of you. Examine what each might involve, what could go wrong and what you would need to know before choosing.

The Decision Table

Make a plan you can actually live with

A good idea is easier to imagine than to carry out. Look at how your plan fits around work, relationships, time, energy and everything else competing for your attention.

When the Plan Meets Tuesday

Think about what happens next

A decision may solve one problem while creating others. Look at what else your choices might affect before you commit to a particular direction.

Wider Consequences

Keep what you've discovered

Your earlier thinking doesn't have to disappear. Save your observations, decisions and next steps, then return to them as circumstances change.

Your private Life Work

Hear a different perspective

When you're too close to something to see it clearly, examine the situation from several points of view using the Council allowances included in Gold.

A little room to think

Your life is complicated because it's yours.

Decisions rarely arrive on their own. There's work to consider, other people's needs, money, energy, timing, relationships and the practicalities of everyday life.

Living helps you bring those things into view so you can examine them together.

You decide what deserves your attention, what you want to explore and what you might do with what you discover.

You can begin with one question and follow it wherever it leads. You can also put it aside and return when you're ready.

What this looks like in practice

Suppose you're thinking about making a change.

Perhaps you're considering changing jobs. There are reasons to stay and reasons to leave. Some are practical, some are personal, and a few are difficult to untangle.

You could begin by exploring what you're hoping a change will improve. Then use the Decision Table to compare your options and look at the questions you still need to answer.

Wider Consequences would help you consider how each option might affect your finances, relationships, responsibilities and plans for the future.

If you decide to act, When the Plan Meets Tuesday gives you somewhere to think through the practical difficulties before they arrive.

And if things change, your earlier thinking is still in your private Life Work. You can return to it, see what you've learned and consider your next step.

That's one example. The same approach can be used with all sorts of situations.

A note from Martin

Why I created Living.

Martin Rothery enjoying a quiet moment with birds

I've spent much of my working life exploring how people think, make decisions and change the way they live.

One thing I've seen repeatedly is how much people can discover when they have the time and opportunity to examine their own circumstances properly.

But everyday life rarely gives us much room for that. We think about things between other commitments, have conversations that end before we've finished, and make decisions with half the information we'd like.

Living grew from the idea of giving people somewhere they could keep doing that work. Somewhere the questions, the discoveries and the decisions could stay together.

It's yours to explore in whatever way makes sense for your life.

A few things you may be wondering

Before you decide.

Do I need to know where to start?

No. You can begin with a specific question or explore Living until you find something you would like to investigate further.

Can I work at my own pace?

Yes. Your Living work is self-directed. You choose what to explore and when to return to it.

Is this therapy or personal advice?

Living is a self-directed environment for reflection and practical life work. It does not replace medical, therapeutic, legal or financial professionals.

Can I see the other membership levels?

Yes. The main membership page explains Free, Silver, Gold and Platinum, so you can compare them before choosing.

How does Gold billing work?

Gold is available monthly or annually. The Living membership system handles secure checkout, account management and subscription changes.

Your life. Your questions.

Give the important things a little more room.
